I have a 1984 mercruiser 181. It has all the
usual noises under the cover when running, but there is one that is not consistant. I was wondering would the exhaust flapper make more noise if the rubber/plastic end pieces were missing or partly warn away ?

If the rubber has burnt off, all that is left is metal, which will clank away in the y-pipe when motor is running at idle speeds.

Is this a simple repair ? What do you think a new flapper will cost ?

Sounds to me you have normal "exhaust shutter" noise. The 3.0 shutter make noise at different times. Normally "shutters alot" around 3000 rpm. But if your worried about it take a look. Remove the rubber boot from the riser and look down the exhaust tube. Shutter is down just a little ways in their.

Shutter list for $20.50 P/N 60930

Thanks for your input. It's an older boat and it's easy to get concerned/paranoid about intermittent noises.
Thanks again,
Jackrg
