i got my manifold and riser off right now, thought i'd have a gander at my flapper. bummer. i don't seem to have one, though i'm guessing that i did at one point or another. it's on my '72 165HP listed below. figure i had one because i still have a bar going accross the exhaust tube.
question is do i really need it? i thought that i did. i ask a buddy with a newer bayliner/mercrusier and he says he dont have one. i asked the dealer and the cat i deal with there says he didn't have one on the baja he just sold. and lastley i see in my oem manual that it starts out on flappers by saying, if so equipped.
i got me a new one, aint put it in yet but am wondering what the conseses is on it. needed or not. i also ain't in flowing seas, leaveing it sit in the lake or river for more that 2 or 3 days max, usually just trailor it. so backing it in on the trailor i guess would be an issue. just can't decide if i should go do it or not. any suggestions one way or the other?
the other thing is that the new flapper is an oval. sits in a round exhaust tube. mercrusier dealer says it's the right part. is it. guess i'd have thought that it would have been round. pic on the dougrussell breakdown, looks round to me??????? pic at mercrusier dealer looked round too. dealer insists that the oval flapper is correct.....

Re: exhaust flappers, again

I've owned 3 boats, operated them in all kinds of water and none of them had flappers. In my experience they have never been an issue. However, I always de-celerate slowly. A swift de-celeration with a following sea could be a problem. If ya bought it throw it on.......

I have a 97 Volvo Penta, just removed the flappers due to failure. Volvo recommends removal because they don't work as well as they planned and they fail too much. Got the service bulletin from them and it states to remove them and also says that on all newer Volvo Pentas they won't have them.
