Exhaust Flappers...since when?

Hi all. I have a 78-79 merc 260 with alpha1. No, it's not a pre alpha..it must have been upgraded somewhere along the line.

Anyway, I had occasion to remove the riser to y pipe bellows a while back (On log style manifolds if that helps), and thought I'd check the flappers I've heard so much about...I found no flappers, no hangers for flappers, just a hollow pipe.


Did merc always use these things, or is there a year where they started using them?

Look it up in the parts manual, you'll find you need some.

I dont have any flappers and have through hull exaust. I have the flappers on the outside of the exhaust tips.

Ayuh,..... Only the Outdrive was Upgraded to an Alpha 1,...
It's a Direct bolt on replacement for the Model 1 outdrive on the Model 1 driveline your boat has....
The shutters are in the Bottom of your Y-pipe....

Thanks for the info. It will be difficult to inspect them then, unless the whole thing is apart, which will likely signal an upgrade anyway.
