hi
I have 125 1988
well Im pretty sure I did not do the right procedure for installing the exhaust gasket.
I did the gasket with black gasket maker and never retorque it after initial installation
1st question should I just retorque if so at what poundage?
or should I remove the head again and install a rubber gasket

what would be the symptoms if I did not to it correctly?

thanks

Re: exhaust gasket torque

Exhaust cover and gaskets do not need to be re-torqued. Bolts should be initially torqued to 70 inch pounds and no gasket maker is necessary. The only symptom would be from too little torque and that would be a blown gasket, usually at the bottom dog-leg with possible water intrusion into the cylinder(s).

Re: exhaust gasket torque

well that's what im trying to say... there is no gasket I put only gasket maker and its very possible I did not do it right... maybe some gaps between the motor leg...

so im guessing I must remove the head... I really did not want to remove the foot, cabs etc to get to install new gasket but its gotta be done

thanks

Re: exhaust gasket torque

If we are talking about the exhaust cover and stainless plate, there is no need to remove anything to disassemble it. The bottom three bolts are difficult, but a 7/16 box end wrench will get them.

Now, before you go jumping to confusions, run the engine and see if you have any leaks. There is a strong possibility that it will be sealed. I can understand not wanting to buy new gaskets at 11 bucks apiece but if it does leak, that is your only option---unless you enjoy making gaskets that size by hand. Use a child's hole punch to make the bolt holes in it.

If we are talking about the gasket between the engine block and match plate, a gasket there is very important because it not only seals exhaust, but seals the water supply up into the block. Again, run the engine before disassembling. The block mounting studs are 3/8 so you would use standard torque for them--I think it is about 280 inch pounds. You do not need to re-torque these mounting studs either.

Re: exhaust gasket torque

That spacer plate is a match plate and serves to hold the exhaust downtube and move water from the brass supply tube to the engine block inlet. Because no exhaust ever enters the midleg area around the downtube, no gasket is necessary. A thin coating of permatex, silicone RTV, or gasket maker is more than sufficient.

Interestingly, early Chrysler engines did use a gasket but it was discontinued before the 1970s
