1978 Johnson 20 model#20cr78c
Does it need a gasket or seal around it? I just drained my l/u oil and it was a light green/milky color. I was troubleshooting the problem: Changed washers, tightened screws well, but was wondering if this could be the reason for water in fluid(besides seals needing replacement) if the gasket or seal is missing. Thanks

Re: exhaust housing cover plate question

Hi Mountain
No the gasket on this cover would have no affect on your gear oil. How ever there should be a gasket installled on this cover. Presure and vacuume test your lower unit, this will tell you where your problem is.

Re: exhaust housing cover plate question

OMC recommends their gasket sealer on both sides of the exhaust cover gasket. I don't thnk this has anything to do with your L/U problem, either.
