Exhaust housing water tube coupling - 69 6hp

I am in the process of replacing the water pump in 69 6hp long shaft. Have the original service manual and have the lu off. The water tube came off with the water pump housing.

Pretty sure I have a problem where the water tube connects to the exhaust housing with a grommet. First of all, the upper end of the tube had what looked like silicone caulk material gooped up on the end of the tube...definitely not grease.

When I look up into the exhaust housing I see a piece of copper tube, the same diameter as the water tube, that is flush where I would have expected the grommet to be. The tube is not out of round like it would be if it had been broken off.

Is the exhaust housing supposed to have the stub of a copper tube attached to it?

It looks like the grommet has deteriorated to the point where it is a hardened mass that is holding the stub of the piece of copper tube in place, but I don't have any experience with outboard repair and this could be the design (although that would leave no place to insert the grommet).

Unfortunately, the manual doesn't show this connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind of sounds like somebody's idea of a fix for a broken tube, doesn't it? The tube is supposed to plug directly into the grommet. You can see the parts list/blowup at http://shop.evinrude.com/

I agree that someone did a jackleg repair or extension of the motor. The point where the water tube is inserted into the water passage at the upper end of the exhaust housing, should have a black, rubber grommet, just like the one that is inserted into the water pump housing.

If you need to fabricate a water tube, the part that goes in a '69 6hp is close enough to stock plumbing tubing, to use it. Just be sure to get the "dogleg" in the tube right and make sure it is the proper length.

Thanks for the replies.

I had checked the exploded parts diagram and noted that is called for the same grommet that is used on the impeller housing, but wanted to a gut check from someone who has actually done a similar job.

I will keep chipping/prying away ill I get the old copper and grommet out. The bolts holding the shaft extension have the heads broken off so I can't take the extension off. If I can solve the water problem, I may then try to extract the broken volts from the exhaust housing. (I think corrosion is the only thing holding the extension and lower unit to the exhaust housing!)

The motor came as a factory stock long-shaft, at least according the manufacturer's plate on the motor.

When you replace the upper grommet, be sure to get the round "nipples" in the exhaust housing properly. The housing has corresponsding holes in it, to allow the nipples to seat. If you don't do this, the grommet will be squeezed in the middle and the tubing will have a tendency make the rubber roll inward, as you insert it.
