exhaust manifolds

I need to replace the exhaust manifolds and risers on a 7.4 liter Mercruiser Model MCM with Bravo 1 outdrive. This is a raw water cooling setup. Go2marine.com has Mercruiser aluminum manifold kit #59245 and 3 inch riser extension #50305 manufacture GLM. I would like to loose the extra weight. They look to be modeled after the factory manifolds.

Can anyone out there give me the pros and cons of these aluminum manifolds?

Thanks for your help. Kevdawg

Re: exhaust manifolds

the longevity of the AL manifolds in salt is short.
after a year or so they will be even lighter than new.

Re: exhaust manifolds

I agree with rodbolt on the aluminum manifolds. But I will say that the GLM manifolds are good quality manifolds.

Re: exhaust manifolds

i found today that the GLM on my 4.3L LXGEN+ left me with tighter quarters to service the spark plugs, still do-able. altho i had Batwings before.

Re: exhaust manifolds

The boat is not in salt water no more then 3/4 days at a time.when I get it home I flush it out. Will that help the aluninum manifolds. What about aluninum intake manifold and heads

Re: exhaust manifolds

If you want a lot of aluminum parts on your engine, stay away from salt and brackish water. That's all there is to it.
You could use a closed cooling sytem on aluminum heads, intake, and manifolds (exhaust and intake) which would eliminate the problems of corrosion, but the risers are still going to corrode quicker, even with flushing. It's the nature of the beast (salt water).
