can this be from exhaust manifold breech or can the lower end where impellor and exhast ports be the place to look

Depends on where your pee tube is plumbed. On my engine (different than yours) it is plumbed off the exhaust water jacket and if there is a hole in there, possibly a bad gasket, then it is possible for what you say to happen. If plumbed off the rear of the block, somewhere around where the spark plugs are, then I'd say no.

the thermostat is above the spark plugs on power head Its blowing exhaust back thru the water in take. hard to believe itll run. Im guessing first shot would be to pull exhaust cover and manifold see if the breech is there Im hoping cylinders are in one piece a compression check shows both cylinders at 126 lbs I have the merc manual for the motor im wondering if I should pull the top end cover and look for cracks or otherwise?Thankyou for replying
