Exhaust plate removal...

Trying to remove the exhaust plate from my '74 1500. (is that what it's called?) There's about a billion 1/2" bolts to remove, and they are coming out just fine. In the top corner there is one 9/16" bolt that won't budge. I actually broke my socket wrench on it. My impact wrench has no effect on it. What the heck?!? How do I get it out, and why is it stuck in there so good?

Re: Exhaust plate removal...

If you're talking about the cover on the port side of the motor, that's the outer exhaust manifold cover.

All of the bolts in this cover are supposed to be 5/16"-NC, with a 1/2" bolt head. The 9/16" bolt-head sounds like it'd be a 3/8" thread, definitely not supposed to be there!

Likely someone broke the bolt in the past, and rather than fix it the correct way (drill out the broken stainless nub and install a 5/16" Heli-Coil), they tapped it out to 3/8". Very Tacky!

Maybe they even used some JB-Weld (or similar glue)in there to hold it in place, and that's why you're having fits trying to get it out.

Probably the only thing that'll loosen it up is heat. If you have a propane torch, that'd be the safest. Oxy-Acetyl outfit you must be very careful not to melt the alum block!

Worse come worse, drill the bolt head off and remove the manifold. You should have better access to the bolt nubbin at that point.

Be sure you check the inner exhaust port water jacket cover for leaks/erosion.

When you reinstall the new exhaust cover/gaskets, be sure to use a bit of anti-sieze or Permatex #3 gasket dressing on the bolts to prevent future sieze-ups. Also torque the bolts to specs. This is a very critical part of the repair, if the cover is not torqued properly, the potential for a gasket leak is increased greatly.

HTH...........ed

Alright, I heated it with my torch and turned the pressure on my impact wrench to 130psi. :) Finally came out...looks like somebody just jambed a bigger bolt in there...

ZM

You re-building that tower ? Or just using it for parts ? When does your summer start over there, and will you be back on the water by then ?

Still haven't decided whether I will rebuild it or not. All the parts are good except the cylinders and pistons. :) I thought I was getting another in good condition for $400, but that's looking less and less likely, the seller is extremely hard to work with. Clams is offering me a pretty good deal on rebuilding it, and it would be pretty nice to have a like new motor. :) Late May/early June is about when I can start boating, although we have already had several days in the upper 70's that I could have gone out. I went to the boat ramp to eat my lunch one of those nice days...almost cried because I couldn't go out! :(

L O L.. :D

At least OB's and parts are affordable over there.
A running TOP like yours would go for 3-4 times that (about $1500US) here .. and they are also as rare as hen's teeth. :(

BTW Clams would have to do a good job for you being a fellow iboater.. Tried to get him to move over here but he was content on staying there.
