HELP !!!, My 1980 50hp 4cyl is only providing exhaust out of the prop. The motor runs very rough and then chokes out and will not restart. After a while it will restart and exhaust normally at an idle but with any throttle increase it starts blowing incredible exhaust even in neutral.

I suspect the exhaust tube seal but don't want to start removing parts without guidance.

Thanks for any replies...

Re: Exhaust Problems

Me too,

I also have a 1980(s) Merc. 50hp. (5683698) and at the end of the season last year, on the last day out, the same happend to me. After running most of the day without issue the motor began pushing the exhaust at idle out the prop shaft. When I tried to pull the kids one more time around the lake I thought that I wouldn't make it back. I did, but the motor was running very rough.
Through other threads is seems that it may be the "switchbox", a part of the ignition system. Let me know if you get a good technical reply. I am about to spend $175 or so for a new part that may or may not fix the problem.

thanks,
Bill
