Hi i have a 1987 merc3.0 litre that has been recently rebuilt i am curently getting a unconstant ticking noise only under load i am under the impresion that this is most likely a exhaust problem. I will change all the gaskets on the manifold and the arm butt i would like to no how to tell if the exhaust shutter is working properly, or should i just replace while i have it apart. i am New to this whole boating maitnence thing and would apreciate any words of wizdom that anyone has to offer.

If you are getting the proper performance, then it's most likely fine. If you have the riser off, you'll be able to inspect it manually. If it's not overly loose or corroded and opens and shuts easily, I would say it's O.K.

Might as well replace them while you are in there. They are very cheap and will need to be replaced sooner or later. It is a good practice to reach as far down the tube as possible to check if there are any old flappers that bit the dust and ended up down there.Charlie
