I have a 5.7 L mercruiser and alpha one drive, 1988, and serial number B784582, that recently overheated. I pulled my outdrive and found four shutter plates in the bell housing. Upon separating the upper from the lower, I found a melted water pump housing and a melted copper pipe housing. Thanks to AChris' video and the right parts, I fixed all of that, and turned my attention to the shutters. Removing the rubber tubes holding the elbow to the Y-pipe and riser was hard but doable. I ordered two new shutters and they arrived today. However they did bot fit into my Y-pipe. My engine calls for shutter part number 14348A1, but that part is not available, so I ordered 807166A3, which the replacement part, and it is a different design. When the shutters arrived to day, they had a plastic ring that is suppose to sit in the Y-pipe, but they did not fit, not even close. Does anyone have a trick in installing these shutters? Or does anyone know a place where I can buy the 14348A1 part? Is it safe to run without the shutters while I figure this out?

Thanks Chris, and I have read through the older posts. But my Y tube is too thick for the A3 to fit. I have seen youtube vids of people grinding the y tube down with a dremel, so the new A3 fits, but was hoping to not have to do that. Has anyone faced this issue and solved it without taking a tool to the y pipe?
