Exhaust water question

I have a 5.7 vortec I pulled and rebuilt. When test running on the engine cradle, I hook a hose to the water intake that would normally attach to the water tube at the transom. The engine runs what appears to be normal temp and the thermostat is new and working properly. This engine has water bypass so that water is introduced into the exhaust before the thermostat opens. Probably too much information for the simple question I have. A lot more water comes out of the starboard exhaust than the port. I was wondering if this is normal? All the gaskets on the manifold risers are clean and new. The specs for this engine called for restrictor gaskets which I insalled. When I reassembled the engine I made sure to clean all water passages and hoses. The port riser does get a little warmer than the other but no too hot to leave your hand on it. Any thoughts?

Nope, water must always exit the exaust regardless of thermostat

block and heads tanked?????

Re: Exhaust water question

When I tore down the engine, the heads and block went to the machine shop. They were both tanked and passages were checked with mirrors and light. The motor does not seem to be getting hot, just the water flow is less from the port exhaust and the riser is a bit warmer, not hot. I just need to make sure this is not a problem before I put the engine back in the boat. Thanks for the reply.

Did you check the manifolds for restrictions like rust and scale? A short video might help...

My 7.4 exhibits the exact same signs as you: one elbow(riser) is a tad warmer than the other side, can see just a slight difference in the water flow out the exhaust when running on a hose but the engine temp is just fine.

This topic has come up before and is not uncommon as long as engine temp is fine.

Thanks for the reply Mark. I was waiting for someone else that has had something similar. Just wanted to make sure before I reinstall the engine.

No problem, that's completely normal... All to do with the 'path of least resistance', you know, the one you take with your wife...:D (I am so dead )

So you're sayin one needs to consider relations in the diagnoses of a HOT problem?

Yea, my wife has told me several times over the years that I spend way too much time reading this forum, I just agree with her, take a break, then back to reading :)

Ok; I'll digress off-topic quick also.

My wife sees me on my chair with my laptop and says "anything new on IBOATS?". Of course my answer is usually about the same: "learning more and more every day to save money".....

Yep, tough to argue when trying to learn and save money.

Every once-in-awhile I really luck out and she asks me that question while I'm typing, actually 'answering' a post and I can also tell her "..and I'm even able to help this guy with his problem" so she knows I'm also trying to 'contribute'....
