Not strictly legal but I have drilled the lower unit just above the cav plate--four 3/8 diam holes on each side about one inch up. No real performance boost, and yes, a lot more noise.
Let me see if I can find a photo and come back and post it. There you go! You can see the holes just above the prop. They are 3/8 or maybe 1/2 (I forget what size I went to) and then countersunk to 3/4 or thereabouts.
BTW: Chrysler 140, Old school, Merc bronze racing prop, either 23 or 25 pitch--again, I forget which.
