Expectations from carb/intake upgrade - enough to raise WOT RPM by 200-300?

Hi Guys,

I have a 1996 Sea Ray 190BR with 4.3lx 190 and Alpha One drive. I recently switched my prop, and am very happy with it's overall performance, and I am still in the RPM range. I am wondering if switching to the Edelbrock 1409 4 barrel carb and performer intake setup will make a big enough difference in power to bump my RPM's up a bit and justify expense. Any of you have experience switching to a comparable 4 barrel carb/intake setup from the factory 2 barrel?

Howdy,

The only really reliable way to increase RPM is to go to a lower pitch prop. You should choose a prop that will give you an RPM (@WOT) at the TOP of the recommended range with the boat loaded where you'll usually run it.

Changing the carb and manifold won't usually make a huge difference on a stock engine with stock (marine) exhaust. If you want more HP, you'll need to add more cylinders (or cu-in)

Ayuh,... I gotta disagree Rick,... The honest 20 hp kick in the pants, Can be felt with the 4.3L....

Dependin' on the rpms We're talkin', it could easily bump ya to the next pitch,...

Callen,... Punch in an extra 20 hp into a prop calculator, 'n see what it says, 'n if yer prior experience matches the calculator,....

Yer boat is a '96,... Does it have the True Vortec heads,..?? 4 intake bolts each side,..??

Bond-o, will have to get back to you on the vortec....thinking I looked at that before, but can't recall.

I'm running a 14.5x21 4 blade, and it dropped me to around 4400-4500 with about 45/46 top speed, which is pretty good on a 190. Will check out the prop calc and see what it says.

20hp sure ain't much...........I sure have a hard time believing that going from 190 to 210hp would make much noticeable difference at all....

Now, 190 to 250, that'd be different. but it's not going to happen with a V-6.

I am going to have to defer to you since you probably have done this mod :D And I haven't.
