I have a 1986 Bayliner Capri 19' with a 2.3 Volvo penta AQ131A, outdrive is a volvo 275. I would like to know what kind of a top speed I should be able to get out of this boat (not expecting anything great just want a baseline) also what RPMs should I be running at these speeds. Thanks for the info. Oh i know it all depends on variables, so say with 4 people and normal gear, cooler, ski, rope... thanks

Re: Expected top speed for Bayliner??

Your looking thru the back door on this one.....get your RPM with existing prop containing the load you expect, and compare to manufactures WOT range.
The speed is the end result of the correct WOT RPM. For best performance, you prop for the correct RPM. If you can give us RPM figures, there are many sharp minds on this forum to get you headed in the right direction.... :)

baja228
Ditto's on what walleyehed: said
Try this site as it's in CA or call them. Get the max RPM at WOT for your boat. They will have the information.
http://www.yellowpages-ads.com/01010843
Then put your average load that you expect to carrey in the boat and go for for a test and check the RPM's at WOT then put another post with the information. (include the dia and pitch of your current prop) most of the people here on this forum will have the information on the top of their heads.. I would have to look it up..but its just a matter of math
BTW I've boated your boat a lot.. a guy I worked for in 1998 had one.. we both worked for a Bayliner dealership at the time..we had a lot of fun with it.
Any Bayliner from that error..35-40 MPH MAX they were all under powered .. it's called Marketing..for a reason.. why produce the most boat for the money.. if the (target area) 25 year old first time boat buyer couldn't afford the insurance.. I don't know about now but back then they went off your driving record for boat insurance.

Link

Baja
If you know the wieght of your boat, gear, fuel, people, and the basic hull type (V or
Deep V, or flat bottom), and Engine horse power can also give you a good ballpark speed.

There is no magic but need some numbers to help you.

I have a 1988 17' Bayliner Capri with a 2.3 OMC. It will just touch 40 on the speedo.
