Bought a 2005 Expy Eddie Bauer 4x4 last fall. The dealer sold it to a gal new and she traded it back to them with 56k miles on it for another new one. I gave them my 05 Sierra Crew Cab Z71 with 98k miles and a grand. The last blue oval rig I had was a 1987 F150, so I did some poking around before I made the swap. I quickly disovered a recurrent them consisting of two issues. Common issue number one is a fuel injector problem. When the engine is cold the injectors can stick open or shut causing a hard start and other fun stuff. That one is covered by a customer satisfaction program that extends to all owners up to a bunch of miles (forget how many, but a bunch) or ten years. Common issue number two is a POS throttle assembly that can flake out and cause the engine to go into fail safe mode. At present there is no TSB or customer satisfaction program on that issue. Ford is sticking with the head in the sand method, which is really stupid, because "fail safe mode" = screwed if on the interstate, towing a boat, etc. I suppose they're banking on a lawsuit being cheaper than another customer satisfaction program. Will they ever learn? But I digress. Guess which one I experienced on the way to work Tuesday morning? Yep. Oh well. As the Presbyterian minister said after he fell down the stairs; glad I got that overwith. Still love the truck, and more importantly, my girls do too.

Spending $600 isn't the end of the world with a 6 year old vehicle. But if Ford is dodging a potential safety issue, you should really send an email or make a call to NHTSA. If enough people experience the problem, and enough of them contact NHTSA, Ford will be forced to listen and solve the issue.

I know. I'm really disappointed in Ford for not addressing this. The internet is loaded with complaints, and it really is a safety issue. Imagine what would happen to a family towing a boat on the interstate if the engine went into limp mode. It could be catastrophic. That's why I had them go ahead and fix it immediately. The good news it seems to be confined to the 05 models.

Just filed a complaint with NHTSA and let Ford know I did so, not that they really care. I don't begrudge the $600, but what about the family of six who can't afford that? Really disheartening.

What, exactly, are you bashing Ford about???

Please, as our rules require, stick to facts and leave judgements to the judges.

JB- His problem is a well known issue with those vehicles and Ford isn't doing anything about them. When it goes into its fail-safe, its pretty much dead in the water (especially if you have weight behind you), this is why its a safety issue. Everything he posted was facts.

In colloquial parlance Expy is widely accepted as slang for Expedition, which is what I currently drive, while Exploder is often used in affectionate reference to the Explorer. My particular Expedition is equipped with the capable 5.4 liter V8 and I am thus far very pleased with it, manufacturing defect not withstanding. I concede my assertion that Ford is taking the "head in the sand approach" could be construed as bashing and will bear you no ill will if you feel it necessary to close the thread. However, in my estimation a known, well-documented and ubiquitous manufacturing defect that is a major potential safety hazard should in all good conscience be addressed. Failure to do so is irresponsible regardless of the motives and policies, which you quite correctly maintain I am neither qualified to assume nor attack, although it's not difficult to deduce what they are given recent history.

Thanks for the clarification, incoop. I apparently am not up to date on what is otherwise well known and often used.

My response was therefore unneccessarily harsh. I owe you an apology and an edit.

Incoop, you always make me laugh. Your witt goes from subtle to outright hilarious. You seem a little on the serious side, now. I hope I didn't insult you or JB with my comment. It was not intended that way. Please accept my humble and sincere apologies if I did...

Those are some decent motors, very capable of towing a boat and hauling the family. Just be prepared when it is time to change the spark plugs, as they are a pain to get to number 4 and number 8 dude to the fuel rails being in the way. One way to solve the injector issue is to swap them with the injectors off of a 04-06 sport track with the 4.0L motor. I think it was a 4.0L anyway. Swap the injectors and get a hyper tech programmer, install a trans cooler and you will be set.

Also another common problem was the IAC motor and the EGR sensor (i can not remember the correct name of it) The iac motor can be routinely cleaned with some brake parts cleaner to keep the crud out of it. Also there is one large vacuum hose on the very back of the intake (follow the throttle neck down and it is on the back side of it) that will dry rot and cause come crazy fault codes.

I've been called many things, but serious is rarely one of them (except when it comes to food and maybe fishing). Definitely did not insult me and I doubt JB took offense either. I do appreciate the kind words though. Wait a minute; am I the attorney, or the gentleman? Maybe I am insulted!:p

Re: Expy Cost me Six Hundred Bucks

I've unfortunately twice now been victim of these so-called "widespread, known, and no we ain't gonna do nothin' about them" car problems. One was our '04 Camry that had a bum intermediate steering shaft issue that the dealer waited till our warranty expired to properly diagnose. They had previously ignored us or charged us for alignments. After complaining to Toyota, fortunately they comped the repair. My research showed TSB's on steering shafts for just about all their models at that time. The second has been with our '09 Accord. It eats rear brake pads in 15k miles. Ate the first set at 15k and then like clockwork again at 30k. Got a couple bucks from an existing class action lawsuit on that one. This Honda will be the last Japanese car we buy solely due to the perceived "reliability." Next car I'm buying whatever is prettiest and/or goes the fastest and to hell with Consumer Reports :p:D!

I thought that was diplomacy:D... No, I think you're right. Diplomacy is the ability to tell one to go **** themselves in such a manner, that they thank you for it;).
