Hey there, I am a new boater and have boat an 18' legend bass boat that has the original paint on it and i would like to strip all the existing paint off of it and repaint it. Now first question is it is on the trailer with 45 Honda 4-stroke on it and i was wondering what is the easiest and best way to get at the entire hull and get it off the trailer to paint? Secondly, wondering what the best was is to remove existing paint whether it be chemicals, or just sand it off with a sander, one thing i am leary about is sanding to much and damaging the integrity of the boat? advise? and Lastly what if any, primer and paint should i use for it and steps to apply it would be? I appreciate any advise or experiences I could get.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... Save yerself a Ton of Grief, 'n sand the existin' paint Smooth, 'n paint over it...

If the existin' paint is still stuck to the hull, DON'T strip it...

If the existing paint is still adhereing well then I agree with just leaving it. Sand with 220 and wipe with Acetone. Any bare spots MUST be primed with Self etching primer. The rest should all be primed with the recommended primer for the finish coat you will be using. For some good info on painting your boat economically, check the last link in my signature below.
