Exterior Wood

I have a 29 foot Cruisers that has wood accents in the cockpit as well as swim ladder, steps and various trim pieces. I believe the wood is teak, not sure.

Here is my question.... The wood is weathered and I plan on sanding it then sealing it. I want a natural look and was wondering would Thompsons water seal do the trick, or is their something else. I do not want a shiny appearance.

Re: Exterior Wood

If it's teak, you can maintain the classic look with teak oil. Basically you lightly sand the overly weathered surface down, then coat it with oil, let it soak, and repeat a couple times.

Wipe off any extra when you're done, the wood will look nice and last even in wet weather.

I'm not sure how well coatings will adhere to teak, given the oiliness of the wood even without the above treatment, but if it were me and I wasn't going to oil it, I'd look for a nice exterior grade polyurethane. Something like Thompsons' water seal won't last more than 1 season.

I never thought of the polyurethane....that is what I finished it out with in the cabin.....water based polyurethane.

I will look for an exterior polyurethane.......

Teak isn't sealed traditionally. Like said before, it's a good choice for boats because it's a naturally oily wood. It just takes a little maintenance.
