external gps antenna installation

I'm getting ready to install an external gps antenna for my hummingbird. I have a ttop but I really don't want to mount anything to it will it hurt to mount the antenna to the side off my console? Will it function the same? It will be facing to the side and not up. Will this work?

Ayuh,..... If it's pointed sideways, it might work, but I doubt very well,....

Mount it to a rail of yer t-top,...
