I have been looking at external hard-drives, and noticed that there are now micro external drives that are 2.0 USB with no power supply cord.

I was wondering since these drives get their power from through the USB cable, will they burn out older USB 2.0 connectors or even the mother boards on computers? Anyone have any experience with these drives?

Re: External Hard Drive

I have one and use it all the time.. It has two usb connectors. One is data and power the other is just power.

I have had it for a year and a half and have not seen any ill effects.

Ditto. I have a 120 gb Western digital USB 2.0 external harddrive with a 2.5" laptop style drive. It has no seperate power plug. It is plugged in continuously and has been so for several years.

I use it to back up my files.

USB is designed to provide 5v power to the peripheral that you are plugging in. If the hard disk has a power supply that accepts this input, you will be fine. I have been running USB powered hard disks for years with no issues. This being said, some will have a special pigtail that allows you to tap off of two separate USB ports, but this is for stability in the unit, not to avoid damage to the computer.

Thanks for everyone's advise. Think I will start shopping.

Not to change the subject, but I noticed these micro drives accommodate a laptop hard drive. Can a person remove the drive and install a larger one in the future?

shouldnt be an issue, I built my own from an empty enclosure, and a laptop drive. others should be similar.

USB 2.0 external hard drives are designed to plug and play. Just plug them into the USB port of system and start backing up your files, music, videos and photos. It is the pocket-sized DataStor that you can use to take all your data with you wherever you go, and it's also the perfect backup drive. The USB hard drive is generally used for backing up the entire hard drive of your computer.
