External Resistor for Coil Question

I have a 1988 Wellcraft 180 Classic with a 3.7L Mercruiser. I am replacing my current coil that says on the coil use without an external resistor. Now when I look up the replacing coil, the coil says on it to use with an external resistor. My question is do I need to get an external resistor for the new coil that is saying it needs one or am I ok without one?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Nope, you need an external resistor with a coil that says "use with external resistor". If it was ok to use without, it wouldn't say "use with external resistor".

What symptoms do you have that led you to replacing the coil?

Sounds like someone has been in ahead of you and maybe put a different coil in, pretty sure it is supposed to be one that requires external resistance in stock configuration. There may be some other electrical mods they made related to that, or they may have just put in the wrong coil thinking they had a coil problem. Does it still have the original points system?
