Extra fuel around carb? Missing gasket? Damaged/misadjusted carb?

I've noticed that if I take off the flame arrestor there seems to be some extra fuel in strange places, like at the mating surface of the flame arrestor and carb, or in small cavities between or around the barrels. Is this "normal"? I haven't run a carb vehicle in years...

I also still need to learn how to adjust the carb's mix, I think I'm running a bit rich based on the exhaust smell...

there should be a yellowish hose from a mechanical fuel to the carb. it alerts you to a bad fuel pump diaphram

I haven't seen anything in that hose so far, but I also haven't paid much attention while underway. I'll take a more close look this weekend when we go out.
