Extra part in impeller kit?

I'm replacing the impeller in my Alpha One Gen 2 outdrive, following the instructions put together by Don S. that I found up in the stickies. I've also watched a couple of Youtube videos of the procedure.

I have the drive split and I've removed the old impeller parts. The old impeller looked a bit beat up:

Anyway, everything is looking about like the instructions indicate. In my impeller kit, though, I seem to have a part that's not mentioned in the instructions, nor was it mentioned in any of the videos I watched. This is what it looks like:

According to a parts catalog, it is something called a carrier assembly, but I can't figure what I do with it or how it is installed. It seems to sit beneath the faceplate of the water pump, but I have no idea if I should remove the old one (or how it comes out) or if I should just ignore it and assemble the parts that are mentioned.

Anyone know what this thing does, and whether I should mess with it?

Thanks,
Jim

Unless the carrier in the drive (below the water pump face plate) is in need of replacing, leave it alone. The pump housing in the first photo looks a bit worn, are you replacing the housing?

Looks to me like 2 fins in the housing are going one direction and 2 the other direction.

Is that how it looked when you took it off?

That often happens as an engine shuts down. It will kick back a little, and that's enough to flick those long soft vanes around. The next time it's fired up, they come back around the way they're meant to...

If your not replacing the carrier seal's and housing. I will gladly take it off your hands as I'm in need of one for my re-assembly. What kit did you order and from where that included that assembly? By the way don't mess with the your original if you don't have to you basically have to destruct it to get it out!!!!! PM me if your interested in getting rid of it.

Chris, I am planning to replace the housing, too. The old one actually looks worse in the picture than it really is, but I have a new one in the kit, so I planned to replace it.

That's good to know. I was a bit concerned when I saw that!

I ordered the kit (OEM MerCruiser alpha one 1 gen 2 two water pump impeller service kit 817275Q05) from a place on Ebay called Nuwavemarine. I didn't realize the kit would include the carrier. I am fairly certain I don't need it. If I complete this repair and don't use it, I'll PM you.

Best,
Jim

That's the good kit with the 1 piece gaskets/face plate made installation easier not having to worry about lining all 3 pieces up with the lip ensuring the housing fits properly.

Not sure if you have the alignment pins or not but those help also doing this for the first couple of times.

Yes, I was happy to see the one-piece gasket/face plate! I don"t the pins, but I plan to mock some up, if I can.

Don't have to destroy it to get it out. They simply pry out and push in (grease first to lube O-Ring). And yes they do go bad, so if you are at that level you might as well replace it. That's why they give it to you.

Re: Extra part in impeller kit?

I sure wouldn't use an aftermarket replacement. I tried 2 different aftermarket ones (the place I was working was not an OEM anything), and they lasted a couple of weeks and the drive had water in it again. Finally was allowed to install an OEM and no more problems.

Just something to keep in mind.

Re: Extra part in impeller kit?

The carrier assembly in my drive was pretty rough-looking, so I replaced it. The old one popped right out and the new one slid in easily. Got everything installed and put the drive together. My first impeller replacement! Not too bad (assuming it works, come Spring!).

Did it by the book, using the instructions you published in the Adults Only sticky, and used only OEM parts. Went together really well. Don't think I'd bother using an aftermarket kit. It's enough work that I wouldn't to have to do it more than necessary....
