Extra tilt trim switch

So I have installed an transom tilt trim switch on my 1989 50hp force and basically I had spliced into the blue and green cables that are running up to the one built into my remote handle, my question or concern is the power cable (which in my case was purple color) is it safe or ok to put it directly onto the battery via a ring terminal? Or even the ring terminal that feeds my fuse block? Because I do plan on adding a blinker style trim on my steering column as well.

thanks!

Yes, you can connect power just about anywhere as long as it is a direct connection to the battery, i.e. starter solenoid.

So it wouldn’t be advisable to connect my blinker style to the positive cable that feeds my fuse box since I have a disconnect back by the battery? Instead I just need to run a wire and connect it directly to the battery?

Yes, the T&T switch needs to be straight to any battery, not literally but any wire that is connected directly to the battery like the solenoid or the red wire that goes straight to the fuse box under the dash. Of course, you can also connect it directly to the battery terminal if you so wishes.

The reason for is that you want to make sure you can still operate the T&T even if the key or ignition is not in "On" position. The very reason for the remote T&T switch is to be able to tilt the motor while you are off the boat. I mean that's the purpose I placed one on mine.

Well I have two other tilt trim switches the original one on the handle and I just added another one as stated but this one is just going to be while motoring the engine and my breaker switch will of course be on during that time so the breaker will be of course flipped to on, however I was wondering If it would cause issues if I didn’t have it always connected to the battery only if I needed it while motoring because it will only be for fine trim adjustments.

i just didn’t know if it would cause any shorting on the trim if and while I connected the breaker.

i assume the best solution is to just run another wire and connect it right to the battery but I was curious.

thanks Jiggz

If you already have a switch in the shifter? Why add a second on the column?
You can pick up power from the positive terminal on the solenoid for the switch on the cowl.
Or run to the battery so it can always have power, sometimes that's not a good idea.
Someone just posted about the switch shorting and it burned up his seals in the motor.
.
The power lead should be a heavier wire 12g
The regular wiring harness was 12g
It worked off relays that didn't need a heavier wire.14g.
The wires to the motor are 10g(I think)

I just wanted my little boat to have a big bass boat feel to it, Most of the new bass boats have a blinker style fine trim adjustment and kinda would like that so I can have both hands on the wheel, I know its not a necessity just something I wanted to do. I wanted to add the one towards the back so I could put on the transom saver after trailering the boat, which i do have that one wired directly to the battery.

Thanks for all the input guys!
