Hello there.I have acquired a 1974 aristocraft boat that use a gm il6 165 hp with a pre alpha M1 sterndrive. The down trim does not work, When I traced the wires back the portion of wiring that goes thru the transom to the trim limit switch had disintegrated. My problem is now two-fold. Since it is an older model the trim limit switch is not located externally on the bell housing but somewhere internally that cannot be viewed easily.I have removed the middle and lower potion of the stern drive for easier access. As I move the bell housing unit from side to side I still cannot see the trim limit switch. My next step is for further dissasembly however the shift cable slide is now stopping me. There is a setscrew which protrudes from the front of the slide which appears to be stock.I am not sure how it should be removed. The manuels do not offer much help. They only say remove it . I do not want to force it or damage it,because it' cable also goes thru the transom and it looks like a bear to get to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If it shifts good & the bellows is good, I would wait until either the shift cable or the bellows needs replacement before going any further.....
That limit swich will only work when the drive is in the full up position, as it is normally closed & only opens when the bell housing actuaues it by contact......
Cut & connect the two wires together in the engine compartment & see if the drive will go down......
If it will not, the problem lies elsewhere......
You will be causing more problems than you will solve by any further disassembly at this time.....;)

Oh & to answer your question about the set screw......
It is actually an allen head on the end, it is just a normal screw, but it is probably corroded beyond recognition.....
A new one will come with the shift cable kit when you replace it.....;)

leon. i don't know about the set screw. sounds like yer fighting an electrical problem. the down button don't work? if so. merc. has a trouble shooter guide in the service manual....when the trim motor don't work down. these are possible problems.

improper wireing
proper switch not operated
high resistance or broken or loose connection in wiring, grounds, or solenoid.
defective pump motor
defective push button or rocker switch.....

i think hm is onto it too. thems 2 wires are for the trim limit. i've had 2 L6's and both had them wires just disconnected. or broke off. it just means that ya got to push in/out + up all the time to trim up as the trailer function is all ya use. just don't trim up to far whilst underway...........

on a side note. a 74 aristocraft? cool. i got a 75, they ought to be carbon copies of ea. other... what color do you have?

also. don't know what manual ya have. but the merc manual is the best.... ya need #2 i think. heres a kinda link........its a big file, so hope ya got space on yer computer and time for a over 1gig pdf file to download.

the blue is my favorite........mines green. lime green even. w/o stripes.....

got any pics.

was gonna say too. if ya decide to abandon the trim limit sw. repair idea, which i would. now would be a good time (as yer right there) to inspect yer gimbal brg and bellows, and ujoints, and lub the drive shaft splines and ujoints, and run yer alignment bar ontoit.......these would be winterization maint. items.....
