Extremely high RPM's in neutral with no throttle

I have a 1990 Rude 115. I was recently towed in b/c the motor was running at 5-6k RPM's in neutral/forward, and reverse without any throttle. My intial thought was a throttle cable problem, or broken linkage, or stuck throttle on the motor. Everything seems to be in working order to the "eye". Is there a "fuel sensor or regulator" that may need replacement to allow my motor to run at normal rpm's when idling? Any other thoughts are also appreciated. Thanks.

Did you recently disconnect the cables and perhaps get them reversed? If not, something has obviously become disconnected. We can't see your motor so you need to have a look-see. Not very difficult to remove the cowl and work the throttle to see if everything is moving correctly or if there are any dangling linkages. I suspect maybe the timing advance linkage rod disconnected.

No recent adjustments. I will have a closer look. Another forum talked about the possibilty of the carb plates sticking wide open. Could this a be a result of broken linkage?
