Hi guys,

i have a 60 hp 4stroke carbed 2003 outboard that has a problem starting. I took out emergency kill switch and checked operation of the starter motor. When it worked fine, gear would come up and continue to turn engine fly wheel. Every third or fourth time i did this the gear would go up and turn the flywheel for a brief second and then fall down and continue to free spin below fly wheel. This is what happens on the water.
This motor has done this since new. It has only done 70 hrs. As it only does it now and again, they have trouble finding the fault at the shop. It now does it about 20% of times i begin to start it. After it fails, i try again immediately and it always starts.

They have checked the pinion gear and checked all connections and batteries. It may be time to get them to pull the starter motor off.

Any suggestions? ? solenoid

Regards

Kellaig

may be time to actually trouble shoot it.
try a voltage drop test on all the cables.
tell your techs that on pages 3-18 and 3-19 of the electrical taining manual they will find all the required info.
its in the module five book

Re: f60 hp starter motor problem

Thanks rodbolt,

I gave this info to the techs and they said they tested everything and that was ok?. They replaced the starter motor but it still fails to crank the engine over sometimes. If i try immediately again the motor will crank and fire?.

Is this a characteristic of the 60 hp 4 stroke tiller or is their a specific test i should now do. could it be the starter solenoid or is this inside the starter motor itself.

well at least ya know the starter motor is ok.
but you still have not corrected the problem.
ask to have a copy of the above pages so you can test the system, its not hard.
run the test with both a digital meter and an analog.
the digital will give a good idea of whats going on and the analog will show any momentary voltage loss problems.
sounds like a bit of poky hopey is going on and last I looked that starter isnt particularly cheap.
I would almost guess they dont actually have the above referenced pages.
they will only have them if they have attended the yamaha electrical training course in Kennesaw GA.
it sounds like a voltage drop due to a cable, connection or battery issue.

Hi rodbolt,

I am having voltage drop tests done tomorrow. Can you please explain why the starter doesn't stay engaged all the time when the emergency kill switch / lanyard is pulled out. Sometimes the starter stays engaged and other times it drops out. Is this an indication of the problem??
Shouldn't it be uniform all the time- that is stay engaed all the time unitl i turn the key off or enagege briefly then disengae it self all the time.

Regards

Kellaig

Re: f60 hp starter motor problem

Had one like that once. One thing the techs almost never check properly is the electrical connection of the starter motor case to the engine block to provide a ground. The starter is bolted to the block, so they assume (with all of the risks) there is a good ground.

Take the starter off. Clean the surfaces of the starter and the engine block where they meet, then reinstall the starter using the factory spec to torque the bolts.

If that isn't the problem it wont fix it, but it costs nothing and it eliminates a very hard to find suspect.
