F9.9 water pump impeller question

I can't find my manual for the kicker engine and have a question for you guys. I just changed the water pump on my F115 and on that motor you turn the driveshaft clockwise to set the impeller vanes in the correct direction. I found a video on changing a F25 water pump and you do the same. However when I removed the impeller from my F9.9 the vanes were turned in the other direction. It is a 2001 ELRZ I believe.

I bought this engine used but it was only 2 years old at the time so I doubt the original owner ever had it apart and the telltale stream always seemed fine but I just decided to do it since it was time to do the 115 also. Does anyone know if that is the correct direction for the vanes? I'm not sure how they could get flipped in the other direction.

Thanks.

Re: F9.9 water pump impeller question

How many cold ones had you already downed when you took this apart?

Easy enough to check by bumping starter to make sure motor turns clockwise like all the other motors I have seen

There were a few involved, lol. I had already replaced the injectors that I sent out to have cleaned on the F115 and changed the impeller on that one before I started on the 9.9 so I was several hours/beers into it. I basically did exactly what you said, it was a clockwise rotation so I went with that and it works fine, I fired it up last night before I shut down the garage. I just can't figure for the life of me how those vanes got turned the other way? That's what threw me for a loop or this would have been a 1 hour job.

The impeller was actually still in really good shape but I'm still glad I changed it because I noticed some wear in the plate under the impeller. I'm going to order that and two new gaskets and pull the lower unit back off when I get some time. No wear in the housing so that's good. One small corner was broke off the impeller on the F115 so it was definitely due, I'm going to bump up my maintenance schedule and do both of those every 2 years now.

All I need to do now is change the fluids and fuel filters on both motors and the lake Erie walleye will be running scared! I did notice a slight ticking when I started the 9.9 last night so if I ever find my manual I want to check the valve clearances also. My big motor doesn't see 20 hours a year but that 9.9 sees hundreds.

Thanks for the help.

Re: F9.9 water pump impeller question

Water pump kits contain cup, wear plate, along with the impeller and costs just a little more that just the impeller, so I always buy the kit.

I have heard that a fuel pump can make ticking noise if it has air in it, may check that pump and for air leaks

Re: F9.9 water pump impeller question

This is the first I've heard of a kit, I went back to ********** and didn't find one so I called and they do sell them, it was listed under repair kits at the end of the parts list. Looks like they are right around double the cost of the impeller so that is definitely what I'll do the next time I change these out. The bad thing is the kit for the 9.9 doesn't contain the housing, or at least that's what the tech told me. Thanks for the additional info.

I'll definitely take a look at the fuel pump, I suppose it's just a diaphram design like most other small motors I've worked on. The noise seemed to quiet down after it warmed up a little which is what made me think to check the valves. Thanks for the help.

Yep, on Yamaha housing is separate and only needs replacing if you see signs of melting or wear, which is not the norm.

Find your manual and see what it says about adjusting

Re: F9.9 water pump impeller question

Well, I never did find the book for the little motor so I just ordered another one. I don't have a lot of extra time and it was worth the money to have the information, I don't like working on these motors without the guidance of a service manual. I checked the fuel pump on the 9.9 and it seems fine so I definitely need to check the valve clearance. On my F115 you need shims to adjust the valve clearance and the camshaft needs to come out, I hate that setup and hope the 9.9 isn't that way. I've had to do that with a few quad/motorcycle engines and hated it, sure is easier when you can make the adjustment by turning a nut, lol.

I have everything just about ready to go, had the injectors cleaned and rebuilt, new waterpumps on both motors, all fluids changed and new fuel filters the whole way around. I should have my manual tomorrow and will check the valve adjustment on both motors Saturday, if that specs out I'm heading to the lake. Hopefully I will have another year of trouble free boating. Thanks again for the help.
