Fabric for my Bayliner...my numbers CAN'T be right...

Its been a while guys but I've been slowly poking at my project...again, I'm redoing the stringers and all in my '85 Bayliner Capri cuddy cabin.

I'm trying to estimate how much fabric to order to recover the stringers. I'm going by the info I have at hand, the West System book.

MY ESTIMATE IS 1094 SQUARE YARDS FOR BOTH STRINGERS! Am I calculating this right?

Original encapsulation over stringers was about 3/16'' thick. 18 oz fabric is 0.0207'' thick (US Composites). I figure 8 layers. With a stringer estimated to be 3.75'' high and 3/4'' wide, and the West System book saying for the top/final layer to be about 2'' away from each side of the stringer, the first layer will be 12.25'' wide and 152.5'' long (148.5'' stringer with 2'' added on each end). Each layer should be 1/2'' shorter on each side...do the math for 8 layers beginning with the first layer, figuring out the square inch size for each layer. Add the 8 layers together and I need 19,698 square inches, which is 1,641.5 square feet, which is 547 square yards, and for both stringers, 1,094 square yards.

High school wasn't that far back but is this remotely right? At $7.60 a yard that's over $8k worth of FABRIC, not counted any chopped mat I need or stuff for the mounts, or the cross members, JUST STRINGERS.

Am I doing something waaaaay wrong or is this kind of work really this expensive? If it is I can probably find a Bayliner a couple years old for that much.

Thanks guys.

Assuming you calculated the number of square inches right, there are 144 square inches in a square foot and 9 square feet in a square yard. So:

19,698/144=136.8 square feet
136.8/9=15.2 square yards

I was a pretty good math student but I NEVER remember hearing about converting square dimensions .

That sounds A LOT more realistic

Using your numbers of the first layer at 12.25" x 152.5", I get the first layer at 1868 square inches times eight layers is 14945 square inches. Divide by 144 gives me 103.78 square feet, divide again by 9 gives me 11.53 square yards which is more in the ballpark. Don't sweat the 1/4" , the fabric will go farther.

First are you using epoxy or polyester resin? It makes a difference.

You won't need to use 8 layers of any type of glass with either resin.

At most, 2 layers of 1.5 oz mat and two layers of 18 or 24 oz. roving is whats needed. If you can find some 1708 that will be even better, but don't stress over it, your boat wasn't made with it.

Your'e looking at about 12.5 sq ft for each layer of glass on each stringer, thats 50 sq ft per stringer with 4 layers, which would be the maximum needed. 100 sq ft total for the job.

Wow, I clicked on reply and then answered the phone and talked for couple minutes, when I hit submit there were already a bunch of replies in front of me. Fast workers here.

heh I guess so...

You guys suppose I'll be good with two 1.5 oz layers and two 18 oz layers on the stringers? And the crossmembers? And engine mounts? Maybe an extra layer back there on the engine mounts. And on the transom? (inboard)

two 8 oz layers on top of the deck, then maybe roll on bedliner seems like it would be okay...you guys agree?

I'm new to the fiberglassing

You still didn't say what type of resin you're using.

No mat is needed with epoxy, so skip that part. Three layers is more than strong enough for what you're doing.

Bringing this thread back up...

If I'm going to be working on my stringers and engine mounts, with an estimated 12 yards of fabric, about how much epoxy am I going to need? 2 gallons?

Well for my 15.6 tri-hull with 3 stringers and the transom I went threw 5 1/2 gallon I ordered 6 and a half from them !! so i would guess you would use all of that maybe a little more !! John

heh quite an underestimation on my part. I just picked up a 17 yard roll of 18 oz for a killer deal on ebay ($30) so I'm ahead as far as fabric goes :D

Re: Fabric for my Bayliner...my numbers CAN'T be right...

The ideal is a 50/50 weight balance of resin and glass for most glass and resin types. Unless you're a skilled glasser you won't get this.

I'd suggest getting a 2-5 gallon kit, starting the job, and seeing how far you get on that. You can always order more as needed.

West system is good stuff, but it's overpriced. Do a search here for epoxy sources and you'll find several cheaper places to order from. Iboats has MAS epoxy that's decent too.

Keep in mind that extra resin in glass doesn't add strength (except it can add adhesion if you're gluing to something) it just adds weight.

Use as little resin as you can to wet out the glass. I'd suggest practice on a 1x2 sheet of ply beforehand, with another 1x1 attached at a right angle on one end, to get the idea behind fillets and laminating down. Post pics here and we'll critique your technique.

I'll check prices again but I was gonna go with US Composites for epoxy

check fiberglasssite.com they have a chart for epoxy resin and coverage for different type of glass. I used their epoxy, worked very well, just wish it set up slower. Had about 20 -30 minutes of working time before it setup.

Thanks for the link. I think I'll start with 3 gallons and see how far that goes
