I can't afford a tractor right now and my neighbor has a Farmall H with 3 point hitch. I can afford some implements, which I would have to buy anyway.

We agreed if I buy the implements, we will share tractor/implements. I'm starting with a bush hog and a pull disk next. We both have very minimum acerage.

How big of bush hog and disk should this tractor be able to handle? I'll be looking for bottom dollar bargains. Just don't want to get something too large that the tractor can't handle it.

Re: Farmall H Tractor

I had an M for years. The H is It's lil brother. Never knew the HP of either tractor but I will say that I couldn't stop that M.

The H would prolly handle a 4 foot brush-hog without trouble.
I don't think there are very many disks around anymore that an H could handle. The H was originally designed as a row crop tractor. Not a utility or a tillage machine.

Built for cultivating and planting and hauling wagons. Farms were alot smaller then and so were the demands/needs of the farmers.

If that H still has a narrow front end and no power steering you are gonna have a devil of a time handling a disk with it.

Too big of a disk will have you popping wheelies, steering with the brakes.

I spent lots of hours on H's and M's as a kid working the produce farms. Check this site out as it has some decent info. Farmall-H.com

I wouldn't buy nothing for that tractor !!!!
IF you hit a woodchuck hole with that it'll flip over so FAST !! just like a Honda 3 wheeler .
We lost afew of the old farmers here over that style of tractor.

How many horsepower is a Farmall H tractor?

Thanks for the link in that other post. I see now that it's a 25-27hp tractor. it'll handle a 5' brush hog. Ford 8Ns are 19-22hp and they handle 5' brush hogs and finish mowers every day.

Tricycle front ends can be a bit tricky to get use to. Plus they can be dangerous on a steep grade. One has to know their limitations for sure. Myself, I never had any close calls with them. Its not how much horsepower they have, it is all in the gearing. You have to use the right combination for the job at hand. I could pull 3 Killbro's 350 gravity wagons with 2' racks full of shelled field corn out of the fields to the barn for down load. It seemed to always get the job done.

Running a bush hog isn't much fun with a non-live PTO.

Nothing is much fun to run with non-live PTO. ;) Unfortunately, any used tractors are still gold-plated, or at least are priced that way.

I plan to use an overrun clutch on the PTO shaft, which is supposed to help.

Rule of thumb for implements is 1' for every 5 hp of PTO HP.
Just a guide to help you think things through.
