Fast at idle speed

Got my boat in the water for the first time since I've had it. I've been in the boat in the past and it reaches WOT at full speed, so that's all how it should be. Top speed is around 55. But at idle, it is fast! Like 6-7 mph. 5.7l omc cobra, Idle is set at 600 drops to 500 when it's in gear. 14.5x21p prop. Is this just something I'll have to bump in gear in short spurts around the dock, or is there some kind of fix? Thanks

Ayuh,.... That's awfully hard to believe,....500 rpms should 2 mph, maybe 3 tops...

Still to fast 'round docks, so, ya, bumpin' in, 'n outa gear is sorta normal....

Maybe the tach's off but it sounds right. And im not for sure on the speed, bur Way too fast for my comfort and way faster than any other boat I've driven. Just checking, thanks.

Why not turn the idle down and see how it does.Maybe the tach is off a little at idle.

I've got the idle set pretty low, it starts struggling any lower. The tach is on its last leg though. Thanks for the help

Re: Fast at idle speed

You do understand that a 21" prop is going to move the boat faster at idle than a 19" or 17", right?

Remember prop theory 101; that pitch is the theoretical distance the prop(and boat) moves forward for each revolution of the propeller.
