I'm not a Merc guy but a neighbor was having problems with a 80's or 90's Merc 90 last season. Says there's no fast idle lever on the control - is there one? Or is there a shift release that lets you use the main throttle lever instead?

It's his dad's boat and it's located in another province so I'm doing remote diagnosis.

Oh, and where would I find the model number tag on such a motor? Neighbor is planning to drag it here and I agreed to take a look at it but I need the model number to help research in advance.

Thanks in advance from an Evinrude guy.

If using the Quicksilver (Merc brand name) 2000 remote you have an obvious lever and it mounts ON the bulkhead with the cables visible. If using the 3000 the unit mounts BEHIND the bulkhead hiding cables and all. To fast idle, push the 2" diameter black button all the way in and then advance the throttle. The button should stay in until you bring the throttle control back to N whereby it will pop out. If it doesn't want to depress in N, wiggle the throttle lever back and forth while pushing. Earlier Merc controls I assume are similar till you get back to the days of the 2 levers and there is no fast idle with them just like weren't with the OMC.

I am sure there is a way to seperate throttle from shift function.----Needs to read an owners manual or post a picture of his control.

Thanks - I suspected it might be a button push or knob, just never been exposed to the Merc side of life. I'll try and get a picture of the control for reference.

There is a square button where the shifter pivots push it in and it will allow you to crank with the fast idle.

This would be an earlier model of the 3000 I'd assume, if not a different model number. I had the round button on a 2000 year model boat with the round button. Regardless if there is a large button where the shift/throttle handle mounts into the control, that if for depressing to disconnect the shift function. If old, corroded, needing oil, worn out or what have you, it may not depress and wiggling the handle while you push may not help. I boats sells them for about $250 with the electrical cable.
