Fast Strike timing question

Hello everybody. Long time lurker here. I recently bought a 1998 Javelin 389B with a Johnson 175 Fast Strike J175GLECD engine. It has a Raker 14.5x24 prop on it. During test ride it stumbled trying to get on plane, even died a few times. When on plane it maxed out at 5,000 rpms and 55 mph GPS. I knew it had a lot more in it. Did a compression check before purchase and all cylinders were 92-100 psi. I figured it was minor fuel or timing problems. So I bought it. After researching a lot this week I found that all 6 bowls were warped, throttle plates were 1/2 open before timing started to advance, and had a bad spaghetti gasket between manifolyand reed cage assembly. I fixed all these issues and put new fuel lines, new and correct spark plugs gapped at .030”,and Evinrude bulb on. The optical sensor and power pack look to be newish CDI products. It has gray spark plug wires. It seems to be running much better at idle on muffs ( forgot to mention idle screws were 10 1-2 turns out, now idles smooth at 7 turns). Only real problem I have is that I timed it with a Snap On light and the high speed timing is 26* btdc with the adjustment all the way (-). I don’t see any way of retarding it without installing a smaller wheel on the arm or cutting the timing advance cam. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, my background is machining and tool/die work. Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention I did the link and sync and also spark plugs fired strong at 7/16” gap at idle speed. Spark weak at starter speed but I think that’s normal and starting is not an issue.

Need the timing tool as cannot time with timing light. If it is the CDI digital pack here is how to correctly time with a light...

IF AN OPTICAL SENSOR TESTER/IGNITION ANALYSER IS NOT AVAILABLE
19. Connect all spark plug wires to a spark gap tester.
20. Disconnect the Port temperature switch’s Tan and White/Black wires.
21. Connect a jumper wire to the Tan wire(pack side) and short it to engine ground.
22. Connect a timing light to the # 1 spark plug wire.
23. Connect the battery cables.
24. Disconnect the engine harness from the boat harness.
25. Using a piston stop tool or dial indicator, verify the TDC timing pointer’s accuracy. Reset as needed to correct and remove tool
26. Use a remote starter (511-6996 is recommended) verify the ignition timing as follows:
ENGINE IDLE Timing WOT Timing
150 4-6 Deg ATDC 20 Deg BTDC
175 4-6 Deg ATDC 17 Deg BTDC NOTE: Adjust the idle timing to adjust the engine idle speed.
27. Reconnect the engine harness.
28. Replace the timing wheel cover, power pack cover and regulator/rectifier covers.
29. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
30. Disconnect the jumper wire from the Tan temp sensor wire.
31. Connect Tan and White/Black temp switch wire to the temp switch on the Port side of the engine.

Oh wow. Thanks for the reply. Looks like I will be ordering the timing tool. Is this the JohnnyRude Easy Timer for around $59.00?

1. Will cranking engine with no spark plugs or gap tester damage power pack or other component? I ask because I've already done that.

2. I have verified TDC with dial indicator. It was spot on.

3. Wow remote starters are expensive!!!

4. My 175 has a sticker on it that says 20* btdc. Is this normal for this engine?

I feel confident that it will run much better since I have fixed so many vacuum leaks and did the link and sync. I just want to learn my engine, get top performance, and ensure engine longevity.
