I just picked up an older boat with an OLDER engine...a Evinrude Fastwin 18. The Model is 18402D and the Serial Number is E11918 could someone tell me the year of this engine? And what RATIO gas to oil should I use?

Hi Lorco,
Your motor is a 1964 model. It's okay to run it on a 50:1 diet, but you may wish to err on the side of caution and richen it up a bit. It has steel roller bearings on most moving surfaces inside, so it should be alright, but the motor is still almost 40 years old and you may want to baby it a bit to keep it around for another 40.
Pound for pound one of the best performers out there. I've always enjoyed the 18s I've had over the years. Lots of regular maintenance parts still readily available which makes keeping them in service a lot easier...
- Scott

Re: Fastwin 18 "a couple questions"

hmmm...I thought 50:1 was rich!....what's got me confused is that when I took the lid off, the lean/rich knob is not connected to anything?...is there a lever that connects to the knob shaft that I should have? is there some modification that would warrant not having that hooked up?...it seems to run in a barrel just fine with a hiccup here or there but it's only been started a few times in the last couple years by the previous owner. I just picked up 2 new plugs and wanted to try those out with some new gas before attempting a carb rebuild. I picked up some Pennzoil Synthetic Marine 2 stroke oil hoping that that will preserve things...what do you think?...and THANX for any and all of your help!
