36hrs back, there was a boating fatality outside our marina.
A 10.5m (0ver 30') brand spanking new $200,000 Luxury Cat with 2x 225 or 250hp outbaords crashed.
Apparantly the owner had just taken delivery of it, and travelled down the coast, then up the Passage(smooth water) to go to his canal estate. When the crash occured around midnight,it had around 6 hrs on it.
I am a member of a Volunteer Coast Rescue and when over there this morning they believe:
The passage is smooth water. You go under a bridge, and the channel is marked, but....... off to the port side are 2 sets of red/green lights marking the entrance to the Marina.
It could be that he saw these lights and turned to port, because he has gone very close to the shore and hit head on a 30' Baycruiser at its moorings,(ride lights on) with possibly his starboard pontoon , climbed right up over it and rolled off the side on to his roof. One person survived, the owner no.
In fact he should have been 2-300meters to his starboard.
It is a very sad day in our small community. What a terrible Xmas present for all concerned.
There are lessons for all of us. One is navigating. One is navigating at night. The other is speed. She who must be obeyed gets real snaky with me when I am not sure what I should do, where I should be, and insists I slow to a crawl to sort things out. She refuses to overnight on an anchor (must be a Marina).Maybe she is smarter then me !!!
Anyway if this story makes just one of us stop and think and save themselves from a similar situation, then it is worth it.
Cheers
Phil
