Faulty starting solenoid

Hey guys, I am currently having trouble getting my 1990 Johnson 30 to fire up. When I bought the motor, I hooked it up to my battery and couldn’t get it to turn over. I rigged the solenoid up and touched it to the starter and got it to turn over, so I figured I had a bad solenoid. I ordered a new solenoid and upon installing it, it’s doing the same thing. No click and no turn over at all. The motor has the original starting switch, and I’m curious if that’s what’s giving me problems. Anyway, if this switch is bad, the oem one to replace it is around fifty dollars. I don’t mind paying, yet if I replaced it I’d want an upgrade. I was curious is anyone knew how to install a turn key start in one of these engines (and what parts to order). Also if anyone had a wiring diagram to one of these starters, that’d be great. Thanks a lot fellas. (Ignore the dirty install, this was only a test run to make sure everything was working.)

selenoid are just magnets closing contacts to allow the high amps flow to the starter.

some are activated by grounding some are activated by applying 12v

generally... the magnet coil is extended to 2 small posts. one is either grounded by a modern computer like ETEC EMM or powered by the switch START position applying 12v back to the selenoid .

the electrical flow to energize the magnet may be interrupted by safety features like neutral switch, in gear , mercury switches etc.. for safe starting

if your relay does not PULL UP.. it is missing either the ground or more typically.....+12 v from the START key position
so you need to track both down. ...and check the fuse if you have one on your model
