I just came back from my favorite watering hole. When I got there, there was a motorhome with a trailer(enclosed) and the owner of the rig happend to have a Vega dragster in the trailer. He was kind enough to let myself and a couple of others check out his car. He openend up his trailer and fired up this car. 540 C.I.D. built up Big Block Chevy. He woke up the neighboorhood with it. I was in 7th heaven. 114 octane, 850hp, 2speed hydroglide tranny. This guy has his priorities right.(he lets his son drive it, and he works on the car and lets his son take the credit) PDS

Re: Favorite Sounds

PDS I can relate, nothing more sweet to my ears than the sound of an old flathead Harley running down the road. It just sets my heart to tingling!!!! Not that the sound of a big block chevy is a bad thing. :) :)

I have 3 (in reverse order);
3) An F-18 in a vertical climb at full throttle.
2) A top fueler losing traction at 1000 feet.
1) My son cooing as he breathes after a big bottle.
Hey Flathead, my #4 is a smartly tuned pan with Porkers pulling away from a light. :)

My favourite mechanical sound is one you have to go to air shows to hear... the Rolls Royce Merlin V12 Supercharged 27 litre aero engine... The best sounding engine ever made IMHO.

Somebody once put one in a car!

Rolls Royce Merlin Car

Re: Favorite Sounds

Flathead, It's sure a different life having a baby at home! He's 9 weeks now. We hang out in the shop for an hour or two most nights. I have some ropes tied off to the garage door tracks and swing his car seat from it, he likes to have his yellow duck swing next to him.
I was just going to put new oarlocks on my dinghy... you know how that goes. Now that I've replaced all the hardware, refinished the wood, applied new anti-slip strips, epoxied the hull and deck and replaced the rub rail (for both mine and my inlaws) I'm ready for the truck project ('57 GMC). Those little suckers took too long but they look nice. I think I should have the truck home this long weekend sometime (fingers crossed). It's in a little worse shape than I remember but still worth doing. I'll post a picture of it when I finally get it home.

Re: Favorite Sounds

I love the sound of silence. After living in a city, or even a small town, your ears adjust to to sound levels of traffic on roads a half mile away, the sound of "boom boom", (the nieghborhood hoopty driver) on his nightly rounds, and then there's the commute to and from werk, the noise of heavy equipment, gas powered saws, jack hammers,ect...On special ocasions, me and Mrs 12Footer hop in the truck and ride on out to Everglade Natl Park, off sr29 and Turner River Grade. As we get out of the truck and grab out fishing gear, it hit you...dead silence! The sound of silence hurts at first, as your ears will ring. But the ringing soon subsides, and it's so quiet, you can hear miles!

Re: Favorite Sounds

It may not be my favorite sound in th whole world, but these are some I have been thinking about lately.

Rolling thunder and the sound of rain when going to sleep.

The sound of toads and gentle waves on a calm night when your at the cabin

Whe first going out on the lake in morning and there is a light fog and the lake is like glass, and you ease the motor out of idle. The sound of the perfectly running engine and the light swishing of water, can't be beat.
