Recently I redid the points and coils on this motor. When I do a trial I am having issues with the motor staying in the proper gear (f-n-r). I will attempt to describe the issue: starting off in neutral, I can go into forward with no real problem. Going into neutral it will not always go out of forward...I have to jiggle the shifter into reverse to get it out of forward. Then when I go into reverse and shift back to neutral it stays in reverse. I have opened the shift rod access door and there is a little play and i can use a screw driver to get it into the proper gear. I saw on one forum that you need to remove the power head to access where the linkage meets the shift handle. I have tried to adjust the handle itself but that had not helped. Any suggestions of what to do next?

Is the detent in shift rod exactly centered on hole in the coupler. Remove lower bolt to see this.

are you doing this with the motor running or just on a stand?

I have it running in a barrel right now. I checked both bolts on the coupler and they "appear" to be in the notches. It's still getting stuck in reverse.

is there any evidence of someone removing the phillips head screw in the lower unit ( by mistake) thinking it was the oil drain plug??

As I continue to play with it, seems to be getting stuck in f or r (depending on how I'm adjusting the Russ) but not wanting to go into n.

sorry, didnt mean taken out and not put back in, meant taken out by mistake and put back in. if that happens, there is a very good chance your pivot pin, aka phillips head screw isnt located properly in the shift lever inside the gearcase. just a thought.

Broken clutch dog yoke (collar), bent shift fork are a couple possibilities. If the coupler is indeed correctly attached, you'd need pull skeg and check inside. You can drain the gear lube and turn motor upside down and remove skeg (and shift pivot bolt) to check it out.

Good luck

OK. Is this motor new to you and always had this problem since you have had it or ....... is this a new problem?

Update....I took off the bottom as suggested. To the untrained eye everything looks "ok" (no obvious extreme wear or wore out parts). Gear oil was milky. Put it back together and still staying stuck in gear. More so forward than reverse. Any other suggestions? Im thinking it has to be something really simple.
