Ok so you guys that have been following this. I’ve rebuilt the carb on this motor, replaced head gasket, prop shear pin. Just put the armature plated back on today with new coils , points and condensers. Now I put flywheel back on to make sure it cleared the coils and the crank won’t move. Can’t turn the prop either. Neutral yes, but not in fwd. What could it be? Thx

Flywheel is hitting the coils.-----Or lower unit is seized.------Did it turn before all your work ??

Well the piston was seized and I got the pistons unstuck before I started all this work. To eliminate the coils, I just took armature plate off. I just pulled the head again to eliminate the head. I did drain the lower unit oil the other day. Did not fill up yet. That’s the only thing I can think of. How can I free up lower unit?

If piston was seized and there was still water inside this engine it will just seize again.----Time to take this thing apart I say.----Motor might just be worth 12 1/2 cents per lb.

Well a week ago it wasn’t seized. I had fire to the number 1 cylinder? How can I check lower unit?

Racerone, you were spot on. I put flywheel back on over armature plate and coils. It went on flush but had a slight drag against the coils when I turned flywheel by hand. Thx

Thx Crosbyman great advice. What’s the point of having a forum if you’re always gonna say read the book. I know how to put coils on. It was just off a bit. I personally thought if it was off somewhat the flywheel wouldn’t even go on, but I guess I should have READ THE BOOK. If I had a book!! Thx

Well---They ( not me ) say ----" even a blind squirrel can find the odd acorn "------Using trial and error can be frustrating and expensive !!----There are many tutorials available online for this wonderfully well built / simple magneto.

Well true, I understand,, but I want you to know I appreciate your advice. Unlike some ppl who always say read the book. Hell if I everyone had the book, there’d be no need for the forum. Again thx a lot for your feedback. I’m 50 years old and have always tinkered with stuff. Just kinda like how things work.

Some folks always ask for help after they have used a hammer.----I am going to be blunt and say that I learned 50 years ago to trouble shoot.-----Folks used to come into a Johnson dealership with their motors.------They would say that they thought the CARBURETOR needed adjusting.--------I would say ----" tell me what your motor is doing / not doing.----Then go about the proper repairs.----Usually nothing wrong with the carburetor !

Well I’m no expert by any means, but I can do carbs coils, impellers, i work on weedeaters, blowers things of that nature. I work for Toyota motor Manufacturing, I’ve been building Camry’s, Avalon’s and Lexus for 25 years now. So I’m somewhat mechanically inclined. But no expert. I’ll try not to ask so many questions. But questions are where we gain knowledge. Again thank you for your help.

if you go to the bottom you can print all you need within a certain page limit allowed .

print pages to a PDF file on your PC or...a PC … then print the PDF files off to a paper printer for safe keeping

Years ago you could download the whole the book :) but now you have to go by range of pages...subsequent print requests will allow you to print all you need or… just what you need

some folks may have the book on a cloud server like DROPBOX...

Coil laminations need to be absolutely flush with the machined edge on the mounting posts. This gives you the right air gap between coil and magnet.
