GOOD NEWS. . . . The PICTURE UPLOAD FUNCTION IS WORKING !!! The tech folks at the parent company have been able to remedy the issue. You can upload pictures once again. Thank you for your patience.
Hello, working on a 1957 18 hp Johnson. Gonna change impeller. Is there anything I need to know about this particular one? Is this like an 1984 9.9? Thx
Most often mistakes are failure to put a new o-ring on the top of the drive shaft, and failure to have the notch in the shift rod perfectly aligned with the screw hole in the connector before inserting the screw. Otherwise, it's a simple job
Nearly impossible to get the shift mechanism out of adjustment !!-----Parts and pieces were engineered / assembled so that there was no way that you could get shifting issues.----We have all seen the many posts about ---" my motor is jumping out of gear ".-----On your 57 model 18 HP there are 2 places where shift function can be messed up with things not assembled / adjusted properly !
Having to remove the powerhead forces you to inspect the lower crankshaft seal---the biggest killer of those motors Only problem is, people will have the parts in hand and still put broken/missing parts back like they were. Motor throws a rod sometime in the future from water ingestion through the defective seal. Then they swear it was lack of oil that caused it. Wasn't the oil, it was the water,
Racerone what are the 2 places my shifter can get out of place? Please elaborate. I know you have to unloosen the shifter rod on the side is that correct? Thx
Remove one of the screws that you just mentioned. It will only go back the same way, providing you align the holes. There are adjustments at the top end at the shifter handle. No need to mess with those. Yeah, I know, people do mess with it in an effort to compensate for wear. In the old days we used to call that making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. So, I just gave away my age!!
