New member here with a tin gem I rescued earlier this week, 1956 Feathercraft Golden Rocket, serial number RR 1 98 56. I had been looking for a 50's aluminum runabout to restore. Had just looked at a '57 Lone Star Malibu a couple of days before hand.

I say rescued because this boat was used for four years as a duck boat before being sold to the fella I purchased it from. He and his son were going to cut the top metal out of it to make it more roomy for a fishing boat. Luckily, his manteligence kicked in and he decided to list it on craigslist. At $250, I don't believe he appreciated what he had. No trailer, but it tucked into the back of my pickup rather nicely.

The boat's original gold anodizing is showing in a lot of places. It was repainted gold at some point, then of course there is the left over camo job.

Restoration will start as soon as I can build a dolley for it to sit on and move in and out of my garage. The back deck will probably have to come completey off to repair some of the formers that have be bent at the top and to straighten the top deck surface. I'm sure the duck hunters walked and sat on that deck quite a bit. What I believe is the worst damage is the keel starting just above the curve. It is rolled to one side slightly and pushed up. It also appears it may have split and repaired with a weld. I'll need some ideas as to the best way to approach this repair.

Other than that and a good cleaning, it has the usual scapes, dents, and rotten transom as any boat that's 54 years old.

Looking forward to picking some brains here and posting some progress photos, though they may be slow in coming. Oh, I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade and have friends who are well versed in structure repair, so I'm lucky in that respect.

Love the lines on her but lord i hope you get that ugly cammo on it. I threw up in my mouth when I saw it. Lots of great tinmen here. What are you going to power with? Vintage or modern? Welcome and cant wait for some progress photos

Re: Feathercraft '56 Golden Rocket

Getting rid of the camo is the first thing on the list. I just wished they had only applied it to the outside....the inside of the hull is going to be the real treat to clean up.

As far as power, it's rated for 30HP, but I've seen them with as much as 40 on the back. I'm thinking a '57 Johnson 35 (Seahorse?) as I plan to polish this one out with red in the place of the black stripes she once had. I think that with some red custom cushions and a red steering wheel would finish it out nicely. Instead of the higher orignal one piece windshield, I though a low two piece would look better and easier to fabricate after getting my hands on some brackets.

Anyone have any idea what the hole to the right of the steer assy mount might be? And it's got what appears to be a cigarette lighter socket. It was after all the norm rather than the exception in the 50's.

Black and Red Bugatti Veyron paint scheme comes to mind for some reason for this boat....;)

That hole, the big one to the left of the switches is the one in question. The steering column that came with the boat was an underdash mount that utilized the three holes shown in the photo (red box). Maybe it had a thru dash steering unit before, that's what I'm trying to figure out.

I was hoping you would try to replicate the gold finish and put a Johnson Golden Javelin on it!

Great find. I drug a lot of kids around Lake Lure, NC behind one with a 1958 Johnson 35. Good luck!

oops i think hit the nail on the head , with the hole being used for a speedo. because of the switches, seems to be right behind where wheel would be,plus back then there were alot of boats with under mount steering systems

Willy,

I'd thought about that paint scheme, or maybe instead of red stripes, use gold. Plenty of time to mull it over as I'm a very long way from paint or polish. Thanks.

Oops - soda blast? that's a new one please tell about it. Does it not deform metal as much as some other materials?

Back when I was a young teen my 1st boat was an old plywood hull that was very simular in size and shape. Was a great little speedster.

They just don't design like that any more!

I'm jealous. Glad you were able to save this great boat. Feathercraft are my favorites. From what I have read soda blast does not deform alum like sand can. It might seem like a lot of work but others have used over the counter paint removers with great success. I too am looking forward to watching the restore.

Very nice hull there, plenty of potential to be a real gem.:)

An Evinrude Lark 33 or 40hp would be a great vintage OB, or a newer one either way she looks like fun:D

I can't wait to see your progress.
Check out this youtube video on Soda blasting.
You can get your own blasting kit @ Harbor Freight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx4aMiv3ynw

I'm just sayin...:D

Got a quote on soda blasting of $300-$500 depending on the amount of soda used. I've read where it runs about $35 a bag and where most boats require 2 to 3 bags. I figure that, buying the equipment, dispoing of the mess, and factoring in my time it would take to do it with one of the portable units, justifies the cost.

While I wish I could do it myself, after watching the video, I don't think my neighbors would think highly of me when that white cloud starts coating everything.

I hope to start on a roll around cradle for the boat next week. Something I can roll in and out of my garage as needed and low enough that I can reach over into the boat to work.

Try these from Harbor Freight for your cradle. I used them on mine and they work great.

Fellow aircraft mechanic here. There is a big Feathercraft show here, near Knoxville TN, in the spring. Just about wrecked my car driving to work, trying to look at all the cool boats on the road. I tracked it down easy on the net.
Hope you get some classic power on that old jewel.
I have stripped the paint off a bunch of airplanes, hard to beat chemical stripper. Methylene Chloride gets after everything. Should be the cheapest way to go.
