Hi Everyone,
I'm new here. I have a federal outboard and all I know about it is that It has a Tecumseh engine. They were sold in the seventies. I think it is a five horse. Any idea who sold them or bought them out? May need parts someday.

Re: Federal outboard

If it has a Tecumseh powerhead, it's an Eska-built outboard. Eska's been out of business for a long, long time. Fortunately, www.certifiedpartscorp.com bought all of Eska's existing parts when the company closed. They have most parts, although the solid state ignition systems are pretty much all gone. I don't think the solid state ignition was ever used on the 5hp models, though.

If you go to the site, you'll have to call the phone number there. You'll need the model number off the outboard. If that doesn't work the number on the tag attached to the engine (if it isn't gone) will do the trick. They can cross-reference the model of the outboard from that in most cases.

If you can give me the number off the tag on the engine itself, I can probably give you an equivalent Sears model number. They also have some parts available.

Don't invest much in your outboard. It has a very low value, even in good condition.

OK, that's a 1972 3.5 hp Eska-built outboard you have there. Here's where I found that:

http://www.discount-marine-parts.com/ob_eska_federals.html

That site has a carb kit for the outboard, and it's a pretty standard 3.5.

The equivalent Eska model, if you decide to call the folks at www.certifiedpartscorp.com, is 1713D.

Sears didn't sell one with that exact Tecumseh engine, but the model number of their 1972 3.5, with a 642-16 Tecumseh, is 217.58560. You can go to www.searspartsdirect.com and put that model number in there and see exploded parts diagrams. That model uses the same carburetor kit as yours, and all the mechanical parts will be the same.

Your engine doesn't have a water pump at all. It uses forward motion to push water up a simple water tube, where it cools the exhaust. You won't want to run that engine too long in a tank, since it won't cool properly. Short runs are OK, though, even dry. The engine is air-cooled. Sears has lots of parts for that model, available from that web site.

The engine uses a Champion J-13Y spark plug, and has a simple magneto ignition, parts for which may or not be available from certifiedpartscorp. Sears doesn't have them.

It's a simple little outboard. If you can get it running, it will probably run for some time. Good luck with it.
