few questions

Ok so I have a 1972 evinrude 18 hp two stroke. Just replaced the lower seals and water pump. Shift rod and water tubes and drive shaft all look very nice. Very very minor corrosion. I'd say not any but there was a tiny bit of powdery white stuff I scraped out and now looks nice and new inside.

Anyway. Before I did the seals and still now after, when I put it in gear with the motor off, the prop does lock in place when you try spinning it by hand but there is a good inch or so of slop. Is that normal? Or should I not be able to move the prop at all when in drive or reverse?

Also, what's the fuel mix ratio?

And when I tilt the motor up it seems very very stiff and its hard to lift the motor up. Is there a zerk fitting to grease or anything I csn do in order to make tilting it up smoother? Yes its unlatched :p

Also looking for these parts if anyone has USED or new ones before I pay premium prices for new stuff.

Lid lock pin that the arm grabs to hold the lid on
New rubber style throttle grip (rubber square pattern)
Choke arm
Fuel mix nob

Re: few questions

1) The play in the prop sounds normal. 2) Use 50:1 premix. 3) There is a nut on the tilt tube on the stbd side. Loosen that and see if it gets easier. But you have to remember that adjustment on the nut is what holds the mtr up when tilting.

Re: few questions

Thanks! So the previous owner put a new fuel pump on and it seems to be like its not working. I keep having to squeeze the bulb for it to get gas. Any sugestions on what to look at? Or what to do in order to get it to work?

Re: few questions

I think its a bad fuel pump. I blow in the little hole on the back and then suck on it as well and no airflow anywhere. Anyone have a spare that works I can buy?

Re: few questions

Blowing and sucking on the little hole in the back "sucks". Seriously, you won't prove a thing that way. If it truly is a new pump, most common reason for one not to work is an air leak somewhere between the pump and the fuel level in the tank. That leak can be anything from gross to smaller than a pin hole.

If somebody has taken the pump apart, they are extremely hard to put back together and get working unless you have the instructions and follow them to the letter.

Are you running this motor on a boat in the lake, or are you running it in a barrel? If the later, be aware that there is a limit how far that pump can lift gas. If you are trying to lift it very far, try elevating the tank.
