I got fiber optic into the home last fall as part of the Rural Broadband Inititive and loved it, up till now. I was running 25 to 30 meg a second... This morning it's topping out at around 7.5 meg a second so I called my ISP and was told, "Yes, our new caps are in place but for a monthy fee (another $20) we will remove the limits.

Wait a minute, wasn't all this fiber optic stuff paid for with a government grant at tax payer, (ME) expense?

Hard times makes people and business do some very flakey thing's. Have some fun with it and find out if the money was government grant. Do a thourgh documentation and send it off to every news corp you can find..somebody will run with it.

Yesterday i cashed a check from another person and money was in the bank. They annouced there was a 5 dollar handling fee...I prostested a bit then the clerk's out and out lied to me about why she had to do it. At that point i just said ok and paid got my money and left. I can assure you i am going to get a lot of mileage out of their policy.

US Bank Corp Chessy banking at its finest.

Remember when long distance toll charges were super high, and now they "almost" give it away as part of your monthly connect charge.
Rural upgrades first took care of your party lines, and now they have pulled the cork out of the bandwidth bottle and gave you a taste of what is available.
But if you want it super fast, your going to have to pay for it from your current provider, who is their compitition around your home?
Wireless or CATV company??

Or do they have a monopoly over your area.

Those grants were dedicated for the equipment. There are many places here in VT that get free broadband/wifi however the circle is so small and only close to the source. Here in my town, the Library is the hub and the 8 -10 buildings that get it free are Town Hall, a few individual homes and rental properties. It was a huge grant that only benefits a few :(

I have internet via my cable which I pay somewhere close to $63 per month and that is for 12 MPS.
Cable company is not a monopoly in this area and the other choice is the telephone company....... still no bargains.

Yup, life's not fair, get used to it and we all die in the end!!

Tail_gunner - dump your bank and go Credit Union ;) If you want to laugh ......... recently the Banks complained that the Credit Unions were offering "Banking" services and the banks felt the credit unions should be prohibited from using the work "bank" in any advertising or context  ............. the credit unions then retaliated and said if the banks wanted to play that game then the banks would be prohibited from issuing "credit" cards! LOL I started with CU while I was in the service for 20 yrs and after I retired I also used some banks (where my first wife was employed)........ after my wife passed away I dumped all association with banks and went 100% CU.

I was on a single provider until 4 years ago when we finally got cable. Prior to that I was not able to get DSL until 8 years ago and I was limited to dial up. I just count my blessings but........... dial up was only $5 per month until the phone company offered DSL.
