not sure if this should be in here but I am looking at buying a 16 foot fiberglass boat with a mercury 50 hp on it (not sure of year but it says injection on it and 4 on the back so I am thinking a 4 stroke) anyways who ever put it on the boat cut part of the splash well (I think that is what it's called it is the part where the engine mounts and then seperates from the interior of the boat) and then added a what looks to be homemade splash well behind that with wood. This has to be wrong if I am correct so how would I fix it the transom is actually starting to rot so I know I'll have to replace that but then fiberglass where they put the carriage bolts through correct if not what else should be done? Thanks in advance

Re: Fiberglass Boat

That is what I was questioning I guess (I should always go with gut instinct with the little knowledge of boats I have). I looked at it and I was told I could have everything for $500, and that was the only reason I was thinking of it. The current owner bought it that way and put a new floor in it (which makes me ? how the stringers are). The only reason I was even still considering it is the fact of the merc 50 hp, trailer, fishfinder, and other stuff he has with it for the $500 I figured I could part everything out if I had got myself in too deep and come out fairly okay. I may still look into the engine to see what that would be worth guess I will have to go to the mercury board and do a little research. Thanks James

Check out JasonJ's web pages about his Skanky Beast. That's what you could be getting into. If you're not up for that much work/effort, save your money and wait for the next opportunity/boat to come along.

It sounds like they cut the transom to mount a shortshaft motor on. It also sounds like they didn't bother to cap the transom afterwards. It is doubtfull the motor is a 4 stroke. If it was, it would be going for more than $500 unless it is blown. Like the others have said, unless you enjoy the process of rebuilding a boat, you should pass. There are plenty of boats out there, and if you only pay $500 for this boat, you can rest assured the money will keep pouring out of your wallet. To put it into perspective, I bought my project for $800, originally just for the motor. I decided to rebuild the boat, and I have roughly $3000 in it now, including original price. I am happy with the boat now because it does exactly what I need it to, but it was a lot of work.

My Guess is that's an older 50hp, 4cylinder, 2-stroke.....
But, If you can get Rid of the hull Cheaply, There's Plenty of Spoils left over to cover the $500.00 Cost.......

If it was Me, I'd buy it,+ Junk It.....
the Motor with Good Compression is Worth the Total Price.........
A single-axle trailer, In Roadworthy condition is worth $300./$500. in My neighborhood........
The fishfinder Has to be worth $50......

Good Luck... ;)

That is what I was thinking of after reading my last post I think I gave the impression that I wanted to fix it up, but the trailer just had new rollers, tires, and lights. The motor runs real good, it has a fish finder with gps, four new seats, 2 gas tanks, and a few other things. It is a friend of a friends (also an accuaintance)who is going on vacation shortly and needs some cash, he spent $3400 on it last year and I told him he was crazy when I went fishing with him(maybe he thought about it). I need to get over to his place when he is around to get the model # off the engine and see what it is worth. (Sorta looks like a late 80's merc a friend has) then if I can auction all the stuff off for a reasonable price on ebay I will get it and try to make some $ myself.
