Re: Fiberglass Grinder

They have these at Woodworkers Supply here is Charlotte, but they have a $70.00 - $90.00 price tag (per each). I haven't tried one yet, but I can buy 80 regular 36 grit disc for that price, so if it lasts 80 times longer would be worth it. Just not having to change disc as often would be nice.

I really cant think of anything I would use that for in the shop..( I dont make wood bowls ).

YD.

PS. Hint about clogged grinding disks ( not worn out..but Clogged ) is soak them in some acetone ;) .

At about $80 each I think I will stick with a flap disc but a neat invention. Good find.

If you watched the whole thing it said it was good for fiberglass too. But still too pricey for my book. I'll try the soak it acetone trick, I usually just toss them.

they are resin backed.......just beacuse the are loaded with gook....doesnt mean they are bad.....the cutting edge is still there.....the only thing is that the acetone is worth just about as much as the disc....lol

Re: Fiberglass Grinder

For a business doing F/G repairs or building products from F/G, a sanding disc like this could be very useful, but it is "could be".

If it lasts many times longer than a typical disc and cuts faster too, then it would pay for itself rather quickly, the only way to know is try one and see. I would frequently buy expensive cutting and grinding tools because they would last for months or years in service instead of a day or two.

For a DIY'er it may not pay to use one.

Re: Fiberglass Grinder

I don't mind being the ginny pig, however the bulk of my grinding is done on my current project. I don't mind to spend a $100 on a tool if it's good. So I'll pick one up this weekend and give it a shot and report back.

Actually I did watch the whole thing as it looked very interesting..but I still cant see where I would use it.

Just looking at it brings memories of having to soak clogged disks in acetone ( therefore the hint because you will probably have to do that to this tool ;) ).

And the cost of Acetone Vs. disks...well I dont soak just one ;) .

All Im saying is when this thing gets clogged when your all suited up grinding happily away..You get the Idea..

Id rather stick to my quick-lock disks..clogg..15 seconds later an new one on ..old one gets tossed into a bucket ( the next time im using acetone I put the used stuff in the bucket ..bingo bango 10 slightly used disks for FREE ).

Let us know how this thing worked out for ya..

YD.

PS. I have the same basic thing that fits on a large 8" grinder..never used it again after the first time :) .

Re: Fiberglass Grinder

Went to buy the new grinding disc yesterday, but the sales guy there (I know him pretty well) told me it was really designed for wood, even though it says fiberglass in the ad. He went on to say others have tried them on fiberglass, and said it was okay but it's really made for wood. He said the wood carvers love them, but if I was buying for glass he wouldn't. So if he's willing to loose a sale over it, I figured I'd take his advice. Bottom line....didn't purchase.

For serious glass removal a variable speed proxon with chainsaw wheel will take out 1/2" glass filets in seconds.
