Fiberglass hull repair...

So I recently purchased a 1984 ranger 373v bass masters classic with a 90 hp. It’s a awesome boat but fiberglass started to delaminate under the gas tank so me and my father decided to pull out the wooden board which the tank sat on, then re glass it back. Well to make a long story short my father put a hole in the hull with a multi-tool. The cut is right in where the hull meets a planing skiff? (Think that’s the word for the ridges on the hull). And wanted to hear opinions on to grind it all out and glass it like any other repair or could I get away with using a filler. It’s in between the rollers on the trailer and on that planing skiff so I’d like to not have to grind it out. I will upload pictures with the post. I wouldn’t say I’m restoring this boat but I’m bringing it back to its proper state and don’t want any bs repairs.

Welcome to iboats,

Since it is all the way through do a repair inside and out. When I did mine I used my grinder to grind back to solid glass and then v'ed the split in my hull. Filled with PB with lots of chop strand in it. Once that tacked up I used 2 layers of 1708 over top (2nd layer extending 3" past first)

Then once that is cured repair the outside which will depend on if you plan on gel coating or painting the repair area.

I attached photos of my repair on the inside. I have not done my outside repair yet waiting for my stringers to be done.

I know the area looks dirty but I assure you I cleaned the repair area well with acetone (very important).

I think you are talking about the strake, (not skiff) :noidea:

Nice cut though. :thumb: It happens. There are a few threads where folks have cut through the hull with circular saws. Multi-tool cuts are more rare.

I have personally cut thru hulls with a circular saw and a chain saw (dont ask)

I have also drilled thru a hull while taking core samples

easy fix. from above and below, bevel the area, tapering back about 2-1/2" in all directions.

then layer CSM, then about 3-4 layers of 1708 in increasingly larger sizes on both sides of the repair.

sand, fair and gel the exterior

sand as required on the interior.

on your 37 year old ranger, you should also check your stringers and transom. you may find you have more work than just the floor under the tank
