I have a 1989 searay 160 I am currently remodeling, and I am thinking of building a swim platform attached to the transom. I want to use fiberglass and make it match the boat, and I have a pretty good idea of the design, my question is about the top surface. I am not sure have to create a non-slip surface similar to what is on the back end and nose already. I am familiar with fiberglass in general but I was wondering if there is a special matting used to create the non-slip surface or if something is added to the gel-coat. I've seen other products such as durbak to coat with, but the surrounding edges I would like smooth, while the top edge is non-slip, just to match the boat. Thank You.

Re: Fiberglass Instructions

I have no idea what it is your trying to match without a picture, but here's how I attained my non-skid surface.

1. Sand the surface smooth with 400 grit sandpaper
2. Prime with an appropriate primer and let dry.
3. Tape off the area that will not have a non-skid surface
4. Roll on a coat of paint suitable for marine use that matches your gelcoat to the area that will recieve non-skid.
5. Immediately after rolling the coat, while it's still wet, sprinkle in some non-skid additive to the desired texture. In my case, I pretty much sprinkled it on until the paint wouldn't hold anymore and it wouldn't soak in.
6. Gently blow off any excess additive. Don't use an air compressor, just blow it off with your own breath.
7. Let it tack enough that you can peel the tape without paint coming off with it. Peel the tape.
8. Now you can recoat as needed following the recoat instructions on your paint can, and you'll be painting the entire platform this time. Just don't put so much paint on that you cover up the additive. I used two more coats over the additive to make it look nice and uniform, but the paint I used was extremely thin. You'll just have to use your own judgement.

The non-skid additive can be found at Lowe's, Home Depot, and Sherwin-Williams at least, and probably many other places, pretty common stuff.

Here's what mine looks like. Once again, I don't know if it's what your looking for.

Re: Fiberglass Instructions

Thank you for the insight, your pic is exactly what I am trying to accomplish. Once I get to this part of the project, I will post pics. Again thank you, this is my first boat rebuilde and this particular forum has been a great asset.

In that vid that I posted, the guy mentions that the flex mold product was developed by a friend of his named Gib Slauter or something like that. Betcha that's the same product as Gibco, sold by MAS Epoxies.

Yes Gibco is the maker, at one time it was much easier to find info directly from them and not through distributors.
