Re: fiberglass repair questions

Tell us a bit more about your boat . . .

Probably not the best idea to address any leaks . . . Fiberglass does not dry, it cures. Getting it smooth again would be nearly impossible based on what you have described.

I think it would be best to find the leaks, if that is what you are trying to address. Structural strength improvement from another layer of fiberglass may be minimal to none.

Re: fiberglass repair questions

That is absolutely a bad idea.

Go to the restoration section, post up some photos of your boat and include closeups of areas where there are problems. Describe the issues in detail. Then sit back and soak up a ton of good knowledge.

repainting boat

repainting boat

after i get out of school im looking into repainting my boat but i have some questions. 1. would adding another layer of fiberglass or 2 to the hull and any structural support? 2. what could i put on the new fiberglass to make it smooth, would that be gel coat? 3. if i did re-fiberglass the boat for support could i do it in such a way that the shape of the boat wouldn't change such as curves and a raised up part on the bow? 4. what paint would b best? 5. what would i put on after i repainted it to protect the boat?

Welcome aboard Red9654 !
You need to post up some pictures of your boat so the guys here can see what you see . Chances are you may not need to add more layers to your hull . If it's an old fiberglass boat the chances are pretty good you need to replace the deck ,stringers, and transom before you do any painting . The good news is ya came to the right place ! Lots of good folks here willing to guide you through any repairs necessary.:)

SP is telling you the truth.. Before anyone can give any real advice, they need to see what you see..
You may need some repair work done from inside and outside of the hull.. If the boat has been leaking for very long
then the foam may need to be replaced also..

1) adding glass to the inside of the hull would add some support, but you need to gut it to get there, and there is adequate support if your existing structural components are intact.

2) I hope youre not considering glassing the hull exterior..bad idea...applying a new gel finish is doable, but labor intensive, and not needed to paint.

3) ?

4) Paint is just a matter of budget...you could spend 50 bux or thousands..each product/system has its place and pros/cons.

5) wax
